Silent Hill f Devs Reveal Why the Game Is More Action-Focused

As Silent Hill f gears up for its release on September 25, 2025, two of the key figures behind the game—producer Motoi Okamoto and director Al Yang—have shared new insights into why the latest entry in the franchise leans more into action gameplay than previous titles.

While combat has always been a part of the Silent Hill formula, the franchise has long been known for its atmospheric horror, psychological storytelling, and puzzle-solving mechanics. The upcoming Silent Hill f, however, is shifting gears, with melee-focused combat taking a larger role.

More Action, Still Psychological

Following the game’s release date announcement, Okamoto confirmed that while Silent Hill f will deliver more action than past entries, it will not abandon the franchise’s roots. Puzzles and psychological horror remain central pillars of the experience.

But why the pivot toward action? In an interview with Game*Spark, Okamoto explained that the decision was made to attract younger players and new fans unfamiliar with the older games. He noted that Silent Hill doesn’t have a reputation for “fun action gameplay,” but that modern audiences—especially those raised on titles like Elden Ring—are craving engaging and responsive combat.

“Challenging and engaging action is what a younger audience wants today,” Okamoto said, hinting that the new direction could help Silent Hill stay relevant in today’s competitive gaming landscape.

Differentiating from the Silent Hill 2 Remake

Game director Al Yang also weighed in, explaining that the combat shift helps Silent Hill f stand apart from the recent Silent Hill 2 remake. While that title became the fastest-selling Silent Hill game to date, NeoBards Entertainment didn’t want to ride the coattails of its success.

“We couldn’t keep making clones of Silent Hill 2,” Yang stated. “We needed to make a unique impression.”

With the remake being developed by Bloober Team, Yang emphasized that Silent Hill f had to carve its own identity. By enhancing the action mechanics and introducing Soulslike elements, the team aims to make Silent Hill f a fresh yet terrifying experience.

Fan Reactions Are Mixed—but Hopeful

So far, hands-on previews have confirmed the shift, with many noting similarities to Soulslike combat systems. While this has stirred mixed reactions from long-time fans, many are cautiously optimistic. The inclusion of intense action doesn’t mean the franchise is abandoning its essence—it’s evolving to survive and thrive.

A brand-new trailer is set to drop on August 19, offering players a deeper look at what to expect before launch day. Whether you’re a seasoned fan or a newcomer, Silent Hill f promises to be one of the most daring—and divisive—entries in the series to date.
